General remarks

Annabelle is an early variety with a high number of long shaped tubers. This variety is an excellent table potato with cooking type A (salad) and very tasty. The tubers will not grow very big, the grading is very regular. The colour of the skin and flesh is bright yellow. Suitable as a salad potato in North West Europe.

Early with an early tuberisation.

Seed treatment

Annabelle has a short dormancy. A heat treatment is not necessary. This variety is rather strong against sprout damage. Can be planted early in the season.

Annabelle requires an average N-fertilisation (225kg N/ha.). A divided dose is recommended. Basic application 150 kg N/ha before planting and the rest after tuberisation. When small size seed tubers are used, apply somewhat more nitrogen (250 kg N/ha). Avoid Potassium-chloride in spring because it depresses the dry matter content. Use a potash fertilizer with a low chlorine content.

Avoid scabby soils. Annabelle is somewhat susceptible for common scab. This variety has a high number of tubers per plant. It is advisable to plant a little narrow to obtain the optimum size and yield suitable for the salad market. Planting distances:

25/32 23 cm 58.000/ha.

32/40 30 cm 44.500/ha.

40/50 37 cm 36.000/ha.

Planting depth somewhat deep and it is recommended to build up good ridges. Annabelle is not sensitive to Sencor. The foliage has a rather quick development and covers the soil well. This variety has a high number of rather weak stems. An early and regular treatment against foliage blight is required.

Make sure that before harvesting the crop is mature and the skin is set. Under dry circumstances, irrigate one day before harvesting. During harvest be careful and avoid mechanical damage because the long tubers of Annabelle are quite delicate. It is recommended to have abundantly soil on the lifting elevator of the potato lifter and use an elevator with narrow space between the rods. Avoid dropping heights more than 30 cm. in the whole harvest chain. Avoid high temperatures during harvest.

Annabelle has a very short dormancy. After harvest cool down the potatoes immediately. Storage at a relatively low and constant temperature (4° C), preferably in big boxes in a coldstore. Annabelle can be stored for some months.

Resistance to diseases

Resistant to potato cyst nematodes Ro1 and to wart disease race 1. Rather susceptible to foliage blight and only slightly susceptible to tuber blight. Annabelle has a very good resistance to PVY and PLRV, but is very susceptible to PVYntn. Somewhat susceptible to common scab. Slightly susceptible to bruising and moderately susceptible to fusarium and phoma.
