Bellini is a very high yielding potato variety. The tubers are long oval to long with a very uniform shape and size. Skin and flesh colours are light yellow. Cooking type B with no after cooking discoloration. The dry matter content is average, about 19.5%.
Bellini is grown mainly in the Mediterranean countries and the Middle East as a quality table potato. This beautiful variety finds its way to supermarkets all over Europe.
Because of a different distribution in the seed sizes, the Bellini 35/55 has roughly 17% more tubers per bag than the Spunta. When the tuber dormancy is broken, Bellini quickly develops good and strong sprouts. Bellini can be planted after a short period of pregermination, but can also be planted directly from storage.
Bellini gives a rather high number of tubers per plant. Compared to the Spunta up to 50% more. The planting distance in the row depends on the needs of the market. For pre-packing a normal planting density can be used. If the aim is to produce bigger tubers of the Bellini for the fresh market, it is important to plant this variety wider in the row. Advised is to plant 5 cm wider than the Spunta variety. The well developing root system makes this variety very reliable. To avoid green tubers and to minimise the risk of infection by tubermoth, a well constructed ridge and the possibility for irrigation is recommended. The best results are obtained from medium heavy loam soils. Bellini is not sensitive to Sencor, but slightly sensitive to Basagran.
The nitrate input for the Bellini is a little higher than for Spunta (+25kg/ha). To let the Bellini show its full potential, a split application is recommended with 70% at planting and 30% at the time of flowering. Bellini has a normal Phosphate demand and requires a bit more Potassium than most varieties. This will help reduce the risk of mechanical damage and black spot.
Resistance to diseases
Bellini is resistant to Potato Cyst Nematodes fysio Ro1 and resistant to wart disease (race 1). Is somewhat sensitive to foliage blight and moderately resistant to tuber blight. The resistance to bacterial diseases is rather good and the common scab resistance is moderate. Bellini has a good resistance to potato leaf roll virus and a rather good resistance to potato virus “Y”.
Bellini is a medium early to medium late variety and will mature naturally at the end of the season. For early deliveries it can be necessary to use haulm killing methods. Bellini has a good and early skin finish, but after haulm killing of a still green crop the harvest has to be delayed a few days. To avoid tubermoth infections at the end of the season an extra insecticide treatment at haulm killing can be applied.
Bellini has a moderate resistance to mechanical damage and internal bruising and is rather susceptible to Fusarium. Also because of the long shape of the tubers it is advised to harvest and handle with care.
Due to the long dormancy of the tubers, this variety can be stored for longer periods in cold stores. Since Bellini is used mainly for fresh consumption, storing temperatures can be brought down to 4°C. This elongates the dormancy period and prevents sprouting.
